Regal Renfrew (and Regal Terrace) :)
Renfrew is a neighbourhood in Calgary that is located between Edmonton Trail and Deerfoot Trail, south of the Trans-Canada Highway and north of 7 Ave NE.1 It was once the home of a Royal Canadian Air Force training base and to Calgary’s airport up to the 1940s. After the training base was closed and the airport relocated, Renfrew was developed for residential use.
Today Renfrew is a quiet residential neighbourhood that is home to growing families, beautiful churches, and lovely old sandstone schools.
If you are looking for the right area to raise a family, Renfrew could be a good choice for you. There is no commercial or industrial presence to speak of, outside of a few local shops and restaurants, so you can be assured that the neighbourhood will be both a quiet and safe environment. There are parks attached to the schools as well as a few standalone parks that your kids and pets are sure to enjoy. If you commute to downtown, Renfrew is also a good choice. It is a 10 minute drive downtown, 35 minute walk, and somewhere in between for a bike (depending on your speed and abilities!)
The 17 bus will bring you to Calgary’s downtown as well. Edmonton Trail is where most of the businesses in Renfrew are located. Local Calgary landmarks like Boogies Burgers is located there, as well as what has become known as “Breakfast Alley” by the area’s locals. “Breakfast Alley” refers to Calgary’s new and increasingly popular trend of going for weekend breakfast or brunch on Edmonton Trail.
A breakfast place you might enjoy is Diner Deluxe, which serves traditional breakfast faire “done right”. You might also check out Fiddler’s Courtyard, a British Pub that offers traditional English “brekkie” for transplants and Anglophiles alike. If you are an active person (or a non-active person with active kids), Renfrew has you covered. The Calgary Zoo is within walking distance, as is the Spark Science Centre. The Renfrew Aquatic & Recreation Centre provides kids and adults with a place to swim. There you will also find yoga programs, dance classes, and fitness & strength programs. Right next door is Renfrew’s athletic park and two hockey arenas. So whatever sport you are into, Renfrew has your playing field options covered. 2
Renfrew’s school-aged residents are served by Stanley Jones Elementary, Crescent Heights High School, Colonel McLeod Junior High, and St. Alphonsus Elementary/Junior High. Calgary Transit access to all of Calgary’s post-secondary institutions is also easily found throughout Renfrew, and the percentage of growing families with school-aged kids is consistently on the rise.
