Downtown West End - Heart of Urban Scene
Calgary’s Downtown West End neighbourhood is the place for people who love living in the thick of it all. The Downtown West End is home to some of Calgary’s nicest high-density downtown neighbourhoods and is almost entirely made up of condominiums and apartments. In fact, there are only a paltry 25 single family homes left in the neighborhood!
Most people who live in Calgary’s West End absolutely love it for its easy commute to their downtown place of work, its immediate access to the Calgary’s light rail transit system, its proximity to premiere Calgary events, as well as the many nightlife spots, restaurants, shopping and coffee shops.
The West End has a lot of great restaurants from a variety of cultural backgrounds. You might want to try the well-reviewed Royal Ganesha, which boasts a laidback atmosphere, full bar, and great Indian food.
Another option is Sushi Jiro Japanese Restaurant. Known for high quality sushi, Sushi Jiro is popular among many of Calgary’s Japanese transplants.
If beer and traditional pub faire is more your style, Brewsters has you covered. With a huge tap selection and famously delicious fries, Brewsters is a great spot for meeting up with friends or watching the game.
The West End is also close to several great places to get your morning (or anytime) coffee pick-me-up. Caffè Artigiano has quality espresso drinks produced by highly trained and super friendly baristas.
If you like to shop then check out one of Calgary’s downtown malls, all within easy distance of the West End.
The West End is also home to several Calgary attractions. The Mewata Armoury is a great place to visit for Canadian history and war buffs alike. You can check out military arms used by Canada throughout its history.
On the other end of the spectrum, Millennium Skate Park is a skateboarder’s paradise, while also hosting a plethora of amenities and attractions for the rest of us. Millenium Park been known to host some great summertime festivals and concerts, including the Canadian music legends the Tragically Hip.
Even outdoorsy types will be enticed by the West End’s amenities – for those who like to be close to water, or those looking for a good outdoor walking/jogging route, the West End is right on the Bow River.
The West End is also home to the Kerby Centre, committed to enhancing the lives of older adults. With great programs such as housing, food services, courses, recreation, adult day programs, wellness clinics, shelters, and grocery delivery, the Kerby Centre helps older adults achieve successful aging..
The West End neighbourhood is also centrally located, with quick transit trips to popular Calgary spots like 17th avenue and Kensington. Calgary’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is popular among city residents because of quick, inexpensive commutes and access to most areas of the city. Indeed, many of Calgary’s residents enjoy taking advantage of Calgary Transit’s “free fare zone” along 7 Ave between 3rd St. East and 11th St. West.1 As of the 2012 census, the West End had a population of 2,322 people. The median income is $47,964. 25.6% of West End residents are low income and 20.2% are immigrants. 53.9% of the residences are used for renting.
